INAUGURAL HEAT OF THE HONG KONG KLQ 3013

Well it was unbelievable today as this inaugural heat in Hong Kong top scored all the teams that participated in the UK. The students and spectators were amazed as Kellet School won with a massive 93 points and will now go on to the World Final. What's more is that this was a team of just three students. Congratulations Lana, Sophie and Max you did brilliantly. In second place was Independent Schools Academy and after a sudden death The German Swiss International School beat Delia School of Canada for third place. The prizes were awarded by Andrea Chan from Bayard Press and the venue was the magnificent Shek O County Club.  Grateful thanks must go to Jodie Gilcrest who, as a member,  made it possible for us to hold the quiz there. Many thanks to all those schools who made this heat so successful.   We do hope that this is a first of many.  Please spread the word to other schools in the Territory and we hope to welcome many more teams next year.  Wayne Quizmaster  09/12/2013 19:25, Jacky Atkinson wrote:

KLQ UK NATIONAL FINAL 2013

As you'd expect the UK Final of the Kids' Lit Quiz was exciting and closely contested. The venue was the superb hall of Kings College in Wimbledon and it was filled with spectators, authors and of course contestants. Gillian Cross addressed the teams with a rallying talk about the benefits of the quiz and Alec Williams wittily choreographed the day. We are indebted to the many authors who came along to support the teams, their presence was much appreciated.  The final was won by: Ailish, Annie, Clem and Hannah from the City of London School for Girls. Finham Park from the Midlands was a close second - just two questions away and in third place was Killicomaine from Northern Ireland. Neither of these runners up had made it to a final before. Thank you Anne Beddoe, Helen Pugh and Dr Silverlock, your school made us all feel very welcome. I would also like to thank the Regional Organisers and the KLQ National Committee for all the hard work that they do voluntarily, without them, there would not be a competition.   I also wish to acknowledge and thank our sponsors - we are indebted to you: SERCO, Scholastic, SLA, MLS, the Hamilton Trust and Discovery Box, and the many publishers who donate book prizes nationwide,  I hope you'll follow the international teams' progression towards the World Final in Falmouth in July 2014. Meanwhile keep on reading.

SOUTH WALES

Hi folks
There was huge congestion at the top of tonight's leader board. Three teams tied for first, two teams tied for second and one team was third. The tension was palpable as we separated each team with a sudden death question. First was Howell's School team one ( Somali, Barooj, Sanaa and Grace), and remarkably their second team also came second. In third place was King Henry VIII. The prizes were awarded by organiser Jane Wilks who will also accompany her team, Howell's, to the UK Final. Thanks to our sponsors SERCO and the SLA.

NORTHERN IRELAND

There was a fabulous festival feeling to tonight's eighth Northern Ireland Kids' Lit Quiz heat at Wellington College. Characters came alive from the pages of books during the Fancy Dress Parade. It was wonderful to see so many kids come dressed up and the standard was the best I'd seen. Top Mascot Prize went to St Paul's High School, Bessbrook for the 2nd year running for their fantastic recreation of Sally Gardner's Maggot Moon. Killicomaine Junior High, Portadown won tonight's quiz convincingly. They played a blinder with their Joker. Congratulations to Nye, Caleb, Emily and Daniel. Our storytellers Niall de Burca and Derek Kielty handed out the prizes. There was a tie for 2nd place which was decided by a sudden death question. The winner was Methodist College Belfast and in 3rd place was Rathmore. Over 150 spectators watched the event from the rear of the hall. They were very impressed with this year's standard. Quiz master's First Blog

Hi Everyone
I'm really looking forward to the start of the 2013/2014 heats of the Kids' Lit Quiz which will commence in Newcastle on 11th  November
Last weekend I flew to Singapore for their first ever quiz and it was a great success. The winning school was St Hilda's. This was a pilot quiz with the real thing being held in April. All the contestants and observers really wanted to see how it operated and so they were pretty pleased with the kids' knowledge.
As you know there is no reading list so just read widely a range of books such as award winners, graphic novels, myths & legends, nursery rhymes. This is where the reading tastes of your team will be important in your team's selection.
I wish you all well and I'll catch up with you at a heat in your region
Cheers
