Unfortunately Ermysted Grammar School arrived late and may have challenged for the lead if their train had not been delayed; as it was they came second. Three schools tied for third place, but in a "sudden death" play-off this position was won by Comberton Village School. Today's winning team (Amelia, Sam, Eleanor and Madeleine) and their coach Cathy Berry went away with travel bags from Serco, a cheque from MLS towards their international travel, books & tee-shirts from Walker Books, teddy bears and a trophy from Softlink, goodie bags from Scholastic and MacMillan, a subscription to Discovery World by Bayard Press, opportunities to attend a SLA Training Day, the UK KLQ National Cup and an invitation to attend the KLQ World Final in Connecticut in 2015.

Our guest speaker, Anthony Horowitz, wished all the teams well and the day's proceedings were masterly conducted by Alec Williams. Our authors, Lindsey Barraclough, Margaret Bateson-Hill,
Jo Franklin, Alan Gibbons, Frances Hardinge, Marie-Louise Jensen, Sally Nicholls, Samira Osman,
Mark Robson and Teri Terry lead the teams in to the hall to their respective places. The venue was the magnificent Great Hall at King's College Wimbledon where we were made extremely welcome and treated to a wonderful celebration tea, which included an enormous KLQ cake. Many thanks to Anne Beddoe and Helen Pugh who were the local organisers, and to Jacky Atkinson, Gaynor Cooper, Barbara Hickford, and the rest of the National committee.
Looking forward to meeting you all again next year.
This afternoon's final heat saw some really outstanding performances. Congratulations to St Paul's B who entered for the first time and came second. But to you: Merlin, Rory, Sophie and William from Portsmouth B, your first placing was well deserved. In the third place with another high score was Windlesham B. The prizes donated by Scholastic and Dorset House were awarded by our author Philip Womack. Thank you for the well organised heat Mrs Hutchings.
One of the tied teams was our authors: Marie-Louise Jensen, and Fleur Hitchcock, but the other two teams were Howell's 2 and Bristol Grammar 2. The nervous tie-breaker was won by Bristol Grammar 2 thus making Howell's 2 the second. Daisy, Lottie, Lottie and Christos now have two days to get ready for the National Final. In third place was Howell's No: 1 team. Many thanks to the great Year 13 students from Bishop of Llandaff School for assisting with the marking and Mrs Olivari for organising tonight's heat. There was a great turnout by spectators which I am sure the readers appreciated.
A half point separated each of the top five teams in descending order. Todays heats set a record number of teams participating - 45 in total. The winning tam was Oxford High 2 - a great result was achieved by Connie, Elizabeth, Alice and Becky. In close Second place was Larkmead and a 1/2 point behind them was the Cherwell School. It was a very hectic time for the markers and scorers. We also had two teams of authors participating - they were: Dennis Hamley, Sally Nicholls, Robert Rigby, Julia Golding Mark Robson, Marie-Louise Jensen, MG Harris, Jo Cotterill and Natasha Narayan. Many thanks to OUP for giving us 44 copies of Tim Bowler's latest book as prizes. With such a large number of schools participating the organisation at St Gregory the Great was spot on. In the end it was Old Buckenham High that took out third place. In second place was Thetford Grammar A last year's defending team. But this afternoon's winner by a margin of twelve points was Litcham School A. The prizes were awarded by author and current president of the SLA, Kevin Crossley Holland. Our guest author, Alexander Gordon Smith, and the librarians narrowly pipped the winning team by half a mark.. The Librarians narrowly defeated the authors by half a point but it was a see-saw tussle. The students and spectators were amazed as Kellet School won with a massive 93 points and will now go on to the World Final. What's more is that this was a team of just three students. Congratulations Lana, Sophie and Max you did brilliantly. In second place was Independent Schools Academy and after a sudden death The German Swiss International School beat Delia School of Canada for third place. The prizes were awarded by Andrea Chan from Bayard Press and the venue was the magnificent Shek O County Club. Grateful thanks must go to Jodie Gilcrest who, as a member, made it possible for us to hold the quiz there. Many thanks to all those schools who made this heat so successful. We do hope that this is a first of many. Please spread the word to other schools in the Territory and we hope to welcome many more teams next year. The venue was the superb hall of Kings College in Wimbledon and it was filled with spectators, authors and of course contestants. Gillian Cross addressed the teams with a rallying talk about the benefits of the quiz and Alec Williams wittily choreographed the day. We are indebted to the many authors who came along to support the teams, their presence was much appreciated. The final was won by: Ailish, Annie, Clem and Hannah from the City of London School for Girls. Finham Park from the Midlands was a close second - just two questions away and in third place was Killicomaine from Northern Ireland. Neither of these runners up had made it to a final before. Thank you Anne Beddoe, Helen Pugh and Dr Silverlock, your school made us all feel very welcome. I would also like to thank the Regional Organisers and the KLQ National Committee for all the hard work that they do voluntarily, without them, there would not be a competition. I also wish to acknowledge and thank our sponsors - we are indebted to you: SERCO, Scholastic, SLA, MLS, the Hamilton Trust and Discovery Box, and the many publishers who donate book prizes nationwide, I hope you'll follow the international teams' progression towards the World Final in Falmouth in July 2014. There was huge congestion at the top of tonight's leader board. Three teams tied for first, two teams tied for second and one team was third. The tension was palpable as we separated each team with a sudden death question. First was Howell's School team one ( Somali, Barooj, Sanaa and Grace), and remarkably their second team also came second. In third place was King Henry VIII. The prizes were awarded by organiser Jane Wilks who will also accompany her team, Howell's, to the UK Final. Thanks to our sponsors SERCO and the SLA.
Cheers
Stunning night in Cornwall a little school which had never entered the quiz before won tonight's heat by over ten points. What's more this heat was the largest to date in the UK. The school was Mullion down on The Lizard. The team of Hannah, Rosie, Ruah and Grace will now make preparations to get to the UK Final on Friday. The prizes were sponsored by Wadebridge School and were awarded by the organiser Megan Nelhams. Our author tonight was Andrew Beasley and he had just learned that he had just been long-listed for the Carnegie Medal. Andrew assisted with the scoring. Thank you.
It was a long drive home and the rest was appreciated after a very successful evening.
Happy reading
Cheers
